Technical Support
Hello and Welcome!

Just Say No! Technical Support... Everybody needs it at sometime or another. A problem developes on your PC that you can't resolve... so you make the call! Questions are asked that you don't understand and you are asked to punch buttons that you didn't know even existed or were afraid to touch. Configurations are changed, settings are changed, but you still have the problem. Next come the dreaded words... Un-Install then Re-Install. Now... If the support technician is speaking of their non-system, packaged software, this may be ok. But, when they ask to Re-Install Windows or Re-Install from your PC's Restore CD... Just say No!

They either don't know any better or they are instructed not to take you there or they just don't care or all of the above.

Here's the situation. When you buy a PC and run it for the first time, many programs are unloaded from self-extracting files currently on your hard drive. These procedures were placed there by the manufactures. They will be such procedures as Phone and Fax Utilities, Address Books, Graphics Editors and many more.

Here's the catch! Your Windows CD nor your PC Restore CD will contain all of the procedures that were installed during the setup of your PC. Unless you have a backup... they're gone after a Re-Install or Restore is complete! And even with a backup you may still be out of luck. Just putting the programs back on the disk may not work. All of these programs need to be registered with Windows. Some of these programs made changes to the System Registry when installed which a backup restore is not going to do and the program may still not run even after being restored. If you did a Full System Backup you might think... well I'll just restore the System Registry too. Wrong! If you do this you will lose all the changes made to System Registry since the original PC setup. You'll be left with a bare system and back to starting over.

Resolutions: Ask someone else before doing a Windows or PC Cd Re-Install/Restore. Get another opinion! Most cases I've found were or would have been just a minor settings change that's been over-looked. It's easy for technicians to over-look Windows settings because every time Microsoft puts a newer version of any of their products on the market they will have changed settings, options, questions and the look with the updated programs. And what use to be here is no longer or has been moved to another window. Examples... there are quit a few versions of Windows 95 and several of Windows 98 already on the market and let's not leave out Internet Explorer. In each of these versions, settings, windows, options and other items within Windows are different or have changed. If possible you need to have someone take a look at your PC settings, either on-site or via modem. Restores and Re-Installs should always be a last resort.

Preventive Maintenance... it's easy!.

Backups! You can't survive without them! When you buy a new PC, spend a little extra on a good mass storage device. These devices are getting cheaper everyday. Check out Iomega drives. Do a Full-System-Backup after the initial system PC setup. Then periodically do backups of Changed or Modified files on system. When significant changes are made to the system do another Full-System-Backup. You can un-select folders of redundant, unimportant and/or unchanged items to keep the backup from being so large. One of the most important things about Full-System-Backup is that the System Registry is included in the backup.

System Management Utilities It can be very helpful to have procedures that doctor your system for you. Doing all the things you know nothing about. A good package to use is, Norton Utilities. It has very useful utilities for maintaining your System Registry and Hard Drives. It makes PC life a lot simpler.
